The fact is no one has a choice about receiving a chronic illness diagnosis. You just get it.
I will never forget the day a doctor looked at me and said, “You have Fibromyalgia Syndrome.”

Kim,
Ain’t that the truth, my friend! I don’t know if you know that my son has autism. He will be the first to tell you that he didn’t ask for it and he doesn’t want it. Some with autism (especially with Asperger’s) seem to do fine and embrace this as part of their identity. My son is not one. He doesn’t seem to think there are very many pros to his situation and he could care less what me or anyone else believes or thinks because we/they don’t have to walk in his shoes (or in his head.) Ryan’s truth and experiences have caused me to re-think so much of what I once believed about life and death and everything in between. If there is a silver lining to any of this, it’s at the expense of my son Ryan, so that’s not a silver lining I really want. Yep, some things are truly not fair…and I’ll stop because I don’t want to start with the cursing. You hit the nail on the head! Mona

Hello my friend. You can curse because seeing your son suffer, in ANY manner, is beyond heartbreaking. It is unfair and one of the most cruel things a mother can ever witness… your child in distress. I did know Ryan was autistic. I knew that after reading about the Christmas CDs. We get so used to seeing the ISO (in spite of) success stories plastered in the media… it is so very easy to Over look the day to day reality of what it’s really like to live with an illness, mental and/or physical. I completely get where Ryan’s coming from. I don’t want to be an ISO poster child! Neither does he. Take it back, neither of us want it! Damn it! And screw the silver lining! This is a sucky thing, these illnesses. No way around it, Mona. Thanks for speaking your truth!💜💝💜

Absolutely. It’s not a choice, it’s not a fad or something that we will ‘feel better soon’ from, it’s not a lifestyle choice. If only we had kept the bloody receipt for this unwanted ‘gift’! x
