My ‘then’ finance “B” and I had just been in a car accident. You can read about it here. One of the policemen that had responded to the accident told me I should go to the emergency room and be seen that day.
“B’s” brother came to the accident scene and took pictures of what had happened. I didn’t think it looked that bad! He then drove us back to our house. I called my mom. I told her I was OK but had been in a ‘little’ car accident. My car was totaled, but I was OK. I never suspected a different outcome. I was going to be fine! I absolutely did not want to worry my mom as she was in no shape to travel due to her own health issues.
“B” and I were trying to take in all that had happened. I had been thrown around pretty good. He sat basically stationary in the driver’s seat as the car spun after impact. His ankle hurt. Then, I started to feel a weird pain in my neck, shoulders, and lower back. My right leg was on fire! I was finding it difficult to walk as my knees started turning colors from bruising. My head pounded! I was nauseous.
It was about 4PM (three hours after the accident), and we drove to the Emergency Room. We were given ice packs and told to wait. We waited hours! Finally, around 8PM we got into one emergency room, we had to share. I was sent for x-rays, and “B” was put into an ankle brace. “B” would not stop asking the doctor for pain medication. (He had a history with narcotics and alcohol abuse that I was not fully aware of at this time, but soon would be.) “B” was so insistent it made me cringe with embarrassment, and the doctor left the room.
Me: “What the f**k are you trying to do?”
B: “I’m in pain, just back me up!”
Me: “No! You already have pain medication at home.”
Me: “Quit being an ass!”
After I had a thorough exam and multiple x-rays, I turned out to have a laundry list of injuries. (What the heck???) Both of my knees were sprained. I had a closed head injury, concussion, whiplash, and a fractured pelvis! The ER doctor wanted me to go for an MRI, but I said I wanted to wait and see my primary doctor. The ER doctor asked me if I would like anything for the pain, after “B’s” behavior, I refused. (“B” shot me a nasty look.) I wasn’t on any medication and was not going to start now.
Since the car accident was on a Saturday, I had to wait until Monday to see my primary doctor. In two short days, my eyes turned black and blue, I was always throwing up, and Ibuprofen was doing nothing for my pain. I called in sick that Monday to work, and headed in to see my doctor at the clinic.
I was put on pain medication and sent for an MRI.
The very next day my doctor called me in, she had the results! The MRI showed I had a disk displacement in my lower back, putting pressure on the nerve that ran down my right leg. It felt like someone was holding a blow torch to my thigh! My whiplash was so severe, according to the review of my x-rays, the natural inverted “c” curve of the spine in my neck went in the complete other direction! My doctor wanted to put me into a white neck brace; all I could think of was watching ‘those kind’ of people on hidden camera doing just fine without the brace. I said no. (Mistake!) I was told to take two weeks off and rest, and given the name of a physical therapist.
Three days later, I went to my first physical therapy appointment… what was wrong with these people…?
